“Ooh. You gotta date?”

“Bye, Becky.”

He hung up and stared at his patio doors. He didn’t have a date, but hopefully, he would change that soon.

* * * *

“Thank you,” Roman said to the lady he’d just checked out. He handed her the receipt and added, “Come again.”

He hated working the cash register but it was the only damn job he could get that kept him away from Cody. He wiped his forehead and thought about the pathetic attempts the other man tried to get him to go out with him. Some people just didn’t get ‘no’ would never be anything but ‘no’.

“How in the world did they get you to work the check-out counter?” Austin had an armful of stuff and Roman could only smile.

“I’m avoiding someone.”

“Me?”

Roman glanced up. “No. Why do you say that?”

“I hadn’t seen you in a while.” Austin glanced around, keeping his voice down. Roman sighed. “I’ve been working. They’ve had me doing odd shifts this week. I haven’t done anything but work and sleep.”

Austin reached for his wallet as Roman clicked the total button. Roman told him the price and Austin handed him a credit card.

“You want to come over tonight?” Austin asked.

Roman pursed his lips. He liked Austin, way more than he ever thought he would. He wasn’t the type to plan ahead and figure out where they were going in a relationship but he did want change from the one-night fucks he’d been doing nearly his entire adult life. Maybe this was the guy he needed to change all that.

“Yeah. Around eight?” Roman handed Austin his credit card. Someone passed by and Roman glanced at them, both men waiting until the person had left before speaking again. “I get off at seven-thirty.”
